I’ve put together a list of verbs, adjectives, prepositions, adverbs and conjunctions that will not only help you better understand what Brazilians say, but also help you create your own phrases in Portuguese.
1. Ser (to be) – Eu sou brasileira (I am Brazilian)
2. Estar (to be) – Onde você está? (Where are you?)
3. Ter (have) – Eu tenho que ir ao mercado hoje (I have to go to the market today)
4. Fazer (do) – O que você vai fazer? (What are you going to do?)
5. Dar (give) – Dar é melhor do que receber (Giving is better than receiving)
6. Pegar (get) – Preciso pegar meu livro de volta (I need to get my book back)
7. Ficar (stay) – Vou ficar aqui esperando (I’ll stay here waiting)
8. Sair (go out/ Hang out) – Vamos sair hoje? (Shall we hang out today?)
9. Poder (can) – Pode contar comigo! (You can count on me!)
10 Amar (love) – Eu amo ver a chuva cair! (I love watching the rain fall!)
11. Sentir (fell) – Sinto que falta alguma coisa. (I feel something is missing.)
12. Gostar (like) – Eu gosto de você. (I like you)
13. Falar (talk) – Preciso falar com ele. (I need to talk to him)
14. Ouvir (listen, hear) – Você consegue me ouvir? (Can you hear me?)
15. Entender (unterstand)– Você me entende? (Do you understand me?)
16. Bonito (beautiful) – Que bonito! (That’s beautiful!)
17. Feio (ugly) – Isso é muito feio! (This is very ugly!)
18. Bom (good) – Que bom que você veio! (Glad you came!)
19. Ruim (bad) – Achei o gosto um pouco ruim (I thought the taste was a little bad)
20. Grande (big) – Ele tem um grande coração (He has a big heart)
21. Pequeno (small) – Esse apartamento é muito pequeno (This apartment is too small)
22. Corajoso (brave) – Ele é corajoso (He is brave)
23. Medroso (fearful) – Não seja medroso! (Don’t be fearful!)

29. Devagar (slow) – Ela anda muito devagar (She walks very slowly)
30. Simples (simple) – O plano é simples. (The plan is simple.)
31. Quando (when) – Quando eu for ao Brasil visitarei o Rio de Janeiro. (when I go to Brazil I will visit Rio de Janeiro.)
32. Hoje (today) – Que dia é hoje? (What day is it today?)
33. Depois (later) – Vou fazer isso depois (I’ll do that later.)
34. Sempre (always) – Você sempre diz isso! (You always say that!)
35. Nunca (never) – Nunca diga nunca! (Never say never!)
36. Mais (more) – O vestido está mais barato hoje. (The dress is cheaper today)
37. Muito (very, a lot) – Português não é muito fácil! (Portuguese is not very easy!)
38. Já (already) – Você já está pronta? (Are you aready ready?)
39. Mesmo (same) – é isso mesmo! (that’s right!)
